Women Who Thought They Would Hate Pole Dancing

Testimonials of women who were convinced pole dancing wasn't for them, and what actually happened...

Pole dancing often carries misconceptions that deter many from giving it a try, especially among women who feel it's not for them. However, beyond the surface-level judgements lies an empowering and transformative experience. In this blog post, we'll share reviews and testimonials from women who were initially uncomfortable with the idea, had low expectations or believed they were not going to enjoy the experience, but after stepping through the doors of Miss Fit Academy, discovered a w space, fun and newfound confidence.

Even before the pandemic and lockdown, I wasn’t a confident person. During the pandemic, I spiraled into the worst depression and anxiety I had ever had in my life. My medications were not helping anymore. It was so bad that I started to become agoraphobic, and was terrified to leave my home. In February 2023 I was in such an awful state that I NEEDED to do something. So I finally took that terrifying leap and threw myself into Pole Dance 101 at Miss Fit Academy. I had never been in dance classes. I certainly was not athletic nor did I workout. I am your typical sedentary gamer with a job that is computer-based. So the most exercise I got was walking my dog.

When I started I was warned not to compare myself to others, yet I still compared myself to others! My anxiety and self-doubt were always shouting at me to give up because “I’d never be able to do this.” There were a lot of times when I would judge myself so harshly. Even with Moxie [my instructor] cheering me on and letting me know I was doing well, I couldn’t accept the little wins. I expected perfection in, what, 3 - 4 classes? She finally convinced me to start trying out Pole Dance 102. That was probably the hardest thing I had to deal with emotionally, mentally, and physically. There were nights that I would come home crying because I felt I wasn’t good enough. Climbing was my biggest struggle. I even gave myself an ultimatum. “Be climbing before your poleaversary [one-year anniversary of pole dancing] or just give up.” Yeah, I know, that is toxic thinking, but that was my headspace at the time. I decided to go back to Pole Dance 101 for a little break. My head exploded when I went back. I had improved! It took going back to 101 to make myself see that I CAN do it.

At the time, Odyssey [another instructor] was getting ready for a showcase with the 101 group. We practiced the same choreography week after week. I loved it because it boosted my confidence. Odyssey was awesome and tried to encourage me to participate in the showcase, but my doubts about myself still held me back. However, I had gained enough confidence to start recording and tracking my progress. This spurred me to jump into Tricksee’s Floorplay class, Low/Exotic Flows, and Flex classes. I didn’t even realize that some of the Low/Exotic classes were more for upper 102 students, but she is so patient and kind. You can tell she wants her students to grow, build confidence, and most importantly, have fun! Between adding Floorplay, Flow, and Flex classes to my schedule I had the amazing Lucee help refine and build my strength and stamina. In her own words, she is a "whore for conditioning". She will make sure you are doing everything right so you don’t hurt yourself and you will be able to get the results you are looking for. Once, she playfully told me she’d beat me up in the parking lot if I ever apologized for my nervous tick (or me just being me) again. In all seriousness, it did help me see that everyone here at MFA wants you to succeed and be unapologetically you. Ruby, Vega, Elektra, Scarlet, Nola, and all the other instructors that I have had the privilege of taking classes with have been so amazing, patient, and kind! I also can’t wait to meet the other instructors I haven’t been able to have classes with yet!

I’m also so grateful for my peers who encourage, lift-up, and cheer on each other as we learn and grow in our journey! I’m so happy with where I am now! It may sound silly, but I have discovered how confident, strong, and resilient I can be. That isn’t to say those down-and-out days where I doubt myself are magically gone forever, but I’m certainly in a much better headspace than I have ever been. I’m a little better at being comfortable with the uncomfortable each day. My new motto is, “If not today; tomorrow.” If I don’t nail that move today that’s fine! I’ll get it eventually! I’m excited to see how far I can push myself and grow! Remember, you CAN do it. Be compassionate to yourself, and enjoy your journey. Stay awesome all you Miss Fits!

Writing this review as someone who's had a membership for a few months (never did a party). I do pole and chair classes. This membership has been a game changer for me. Not only are the instructors great (special shout out to Mimi and Ruby who have shown me that my body can do a lot more than I thought), but everyone is so kind and the community is wonderful. I'll be upgrading my membership soon to add more classes. It's not just fun and sexy, I have better mobility now than I had in 20 years. Progress is slow but worth it especially in the right classes.

This was a FANTASTIC time! We did two classes: pole dancing and country line dancing. Honestly, I was a little worried about the pole dancing class. Our instructor, Poppy, was so welcoming and encouraging! She made us feel comfortable and her enthusiasm was infectious! For line dancing, Anne Marie was our instructor. She was upbeat, informative, and a ton of fun! I especially love that everything is set up to make memories. Taking pictures and videos during your class is absolutely encouraged by the staff. We had a blast!

I went for a friend’s bachelorette party and was unsure at first, but just walking in I already felt more at ease. The vibes of the place are amazing. Then Poppy, our instructor, made us feel even more comfortable. She was so helpful and didn’t mind reshowing us moves. She was awesome!!

Elektra was freaking awesome. She made everyone feel so comfortable and sexy, our group was a little hesitant in the beginning but ended up having a great class. It was super easy and we would definitely come again. Thank you again Miss Fit Academy.

I came in with a group of girls for a bachelorette party, and we had so much fun! A few of us were a little nervous at first, but Poppy was so great at making us all feel comfortable, confident, and sexy! From start to finish, it was truly so so so much fun. If I find myself back in Nashville, I’ll definitely be attending another class with Poppy!!!

I did not know what to expect going in, but Miss Fit Academy exceeded EVERY expectation I could’ve had. Everyone was so lovely, the class was fun and accessible, and the place is lovely. They know what they’re doing. Highly highly recommend!

We had such an amazing chair class. We didn’t know what to expect and were so pleasantly surprised. Not a dancer but they made it so easy and fun. A++++

The instructors were SO nice & understanding. My group is a bunch of big ol gals who had no business trying to pole dance, but we wanted that experience & they delivered. I wouldn't say we were sexy by any means, but it was sure fun. So from the big gals from New Orleans to the rest of the world..... Give the ladies your money. You won't be disappointed.

I am so happy with how much fun this was!! If you are considering a class, please go with Miss Fit Academy, request Miss Tricksee! My group took a class for our friends bachelorette party. I went into it thinking we would all be awkward, I left wishing I was closer so I could try more classes!

All of the staff were really nice and ready to get you pumped up about being there. The building is nice, clean, and they have a bunch of places to take cute pictures. We also got to see Miss Tricksee do her thing - it was amazing.

I took a class here with a group of local ladies I ride motorcycles with. Brie was an amazing teacher!! Her supportive energy radiated throughout our group. Feeling sexy when you're learning something new can be HARD and Brie was a great guide through that experience. I also enjoyed how she structured her class. I went home and practiced the routine she put together, pole-less, in my bedroom. Also, huge shout out to the other staff for their efficiency and friendliness during check in. I went home and signed up for a new member 3 class pass.
